Oaten bread came later on called griddle bread on account of its being baked on a griddle.
The bread or cake was made from oaten-meal flour. It was very hard and was softened in milk before eating each mouthful.
the now common green vegetables were then unknown to the people and were not used.
About 90 years ago tea was first used here. The women bought it in very small quantities because it was very dear. They boiled the leaves in water and strained it and eat the tea leaves on saucers. All this was unknown to their men folk who despised the tea-drinking habit even among women.
It was many years before they became aware of how to make tea as we make it now.
