was neglected and went into disuse and eventually was closed up. We now come to the turnpick period which saw the construction of more new roads. Up to that time, to go from Kilkenny to Gowran (Gubhrán) one had to go by Bennetts Bridge.
Cromwell approached the city of Kilkenny from Gowran by the old Bothar na toindish. On the summit of the hill on this old road is the place where Cromwell erected his guns by which he battered the castle and walls of Kilkenny. The Hill is known to this days as Cromwells HIll. This is the common belief of the old people, that he stormed the city from this Hill despite the opinion of more modern people on guns &c.
