- Long ago people made different kinds of bread from what they make now. The most common kind of bread used long ago was made from oaten meal. The oaten meal was taken from the oats that grew in the fields.
The flour made long ago was made from the farmers' own wheat. There were several grindstones in use in this district. The meal made by these grindstones would have to be sifted through a sieve to take the seeds out of it before it could be used.
The different kinds of bread used long ago were potato bread, boxty bread and oat meal bread. Potato bread was made by boiling the potatoes and peeling them Then they would be bruised into "champ" with the bottom of a porringer and mixed through flour. Then the mixture would be wet with milk and made into dough. This dough was baked in a pan over the fire.
