   “Long, long ago when pigs were called swine and swallows built their nests in old men's beards there lived up in the north of Ireland a blacksmith called Robin Hughes.”

   The old women yelled and roared and struggled so hard that he could not get them into the fire though some of their clothes touched the flames and began to blaze up. The old women were terror stricken then and they yelled still louder. The blacksmiths wife heard them and she ran into the forge to see what was the matter. When she saw the smith trying his hardest to put the old women into the fire she came to the conclusion he was either drunk or mad. She pulled away her own mother from him and beat out the flames, and then he had to let his own mother go.

   Some time afterwards the gentleman called to the forge again. This time he told the smith that there was a rich gentleman in the neighbourhood sick and very bad and all the doctors of country had failed to cure him although there was a huge reward offered for curing him. The gentleman then asked Hughes to come with him and he promised him that if he did, and if they cured the old fellow he would give him half the reward. The blacksmith agreed and mounted the horse and they galloped along till they came to the sick gentleman's castle. They were stopped at the gate by guards but they explained that they were doctors coming to try to earn the reward. They were shown up to the bedroom where the sick man was. The smiths friend asked to be given a large saucepan nearly full of water. When he got it he set it on the fire, then he cut the sick man's
