  1. During the Penal Laws the priests were forbidden to say Mass. Priests fled to the mountains and glens for refuge.
    There they said Mass in "Mass Pits" and on "Mass Rocks" in cover for fear the yeomen might come and kill them.
    A number of these pits and "Mass Rocks" are still to be seen in this district, the most noteable is in Raheen. There was also one in Crannagh, but no trace is to be seem now. One day while a priest was saying Mass in a "Mass Pit" his spies saw the Yeomen coming, but before the Yeomen came, one of the priest's spies saw another spy coming. The priest's spy hid, and when the other spy came he fired from his
