The principal time they help each other is at the drawing in of the hay to the haggard and at the digging of the potatoes. Autumn is a busy time for the farmer. In this season the potatoes have to be dug and put into pits to secure them for the winter. This is also a busy season for the children because they have to pick the potatoes from the earth.
There are different names given to the various classes of potatoes. The potatoes left over after sorting out those to be used for seed are called Liathauns. The small potatoes are called poreens.
