The day for the killing soon arrived. The butcher was there with his axe. The people had come up from the village to see the white cow die. They felt very sorry for her as she looked at them with sad and gentle eyes.
But before the butcher could strike a blow, a silvery voice was heard on a hill slope by. Looking up, the people saw a little fairy prettily dressed in green, "Arise and come home" she cried, and the white cow rose up in the air. Then all her calves rose too, from the field where they were feeding and the great fairy herd was soon out of sight among the clouds.
