    a few pence given to him occasionally by those of his pupils whose parents could afford it.
    There was no funiture of any kind in this school and the pupils used sods of turf for seats. There is a debt of gratitude due to those teachers for the noble work they did in those difficult times when the same price was on a priest's head, a teacher's head and a wolve's head.
    Yet from these schools came some of the most eminent men in America and other parts of the world. Which shows the good foundation of learning they received in these hedge-schools.
