  1. Early in February in the year 1917 a ploughing match was held in Drimoleague. The fields were given by an enterprising farmer who lived adjacent to the village. A large crowd witnessed the contest and during the progress of the ploughing songs were rendered by a poor Ballad singer whose name was Mac Namara.
    During the evening large crowds paraded up and down the streets and MacNamara continued his singing. The songs all bore reference to the Sinn Fein movement which was fé lán tseoil at the time. Late in the evening when the spirit of the people was animated by the singing some members of the Royal Irish Constabulary in order
