- Marriages usually take place in this locality in Shrove. Nobody gets married in the month of May, and nobody gets married on a Saturday as it is supposed to be unlucky. Matches are made in this place, money and stock being given. Long ago, the marriages took place in the houses, the priest coming to the house and performing the ceremony there. The wedding took place at night and there used be great dancing and singing, and the greatest sport was the arrival of the straw boys. Those were local boys who disguised themselves with straw on their legs, their coats turned inside out, and masks on their faces. They usually danced a round and then were given a drink.Another old custom was the pegging of an old shoe after the bridal pair to bring them luck.
