  1. It was a Sunday night, and the Islanders never go out fishing until after twelve. There was a crew from Cill Mhichíl pot-fishing and J.D. was one of them. This Sunday night he waited at home as usual until after twelve, and then he got his oils and started off. As he was going down the road he thought he heard the noise of oil coats coming after him and the thought ran in his mind that they were the other men of the crew coming after him. He kept going and the lonesome began to strike him. He was walking on the right-hand side of the road and when he got as far as the corner near the old church in Cill Mhichíl (near Con Dennehy's house) something stopped him as it were and he couldn't go another step ahead. The hair was standing on his head with fright, and he didn't know what to do. He didn't see anything and still he couldn't go ahead. At last he crossed the road over to his own side, and no sooner did he get there
