- On a lane in Humphrey Desmond's outside farm and about forty yards from the public road lie the ruins of an old house once the residence of a famous character names John Sheehan. Jack Sheehan lived there about seventy years ago, and his chief profession was manufacturing "poteen" and he was a very skilful man at that business. This poteen (as) he sold to the public whom he could trust. In this secluded place, unknown to the authorities his house was often crowded to the door.
Jack being a famous hurler, footballer and bowlplayer made himself very popular among the people. He was also a famous rebel and preached contempt for the English law, though as a business man he was very diplomatic and kept very friendly with the land-agents, rent warners and unpopular persons. It happened however, that one Macroom fair day night at the time of the Fenian movement when Jack's premises were packed to the door a desperate fight took place between some rentwarners and members of the Fenian organisation and the fought along the laneway to the road and then onto the "bridge" where the less patriotic party were completely routed and many were injured.
