- The local poet of my district was Timothy Looney. He lived in Kilcullen, situated in the parish of Donoughmore and in County Cork. He was born about the year eighteen fifty five, and died at the age of seventy five years. He is buried in the United States.
He received the power probably through the strength of education. All his songs were composed in English. His profession was a school teacher. When he was twenty five years of age, he commenced versemaking.
As he would be walking along the road he could compose a song. One of his songs was "The Threshing in Sweet Donoughmore"
1
When Charlie came threshing to Paddy Fittzgerald,
There was lashings of porter and plenty of sport.
And better than all was to join in our labour,
A troop of young girls they did us resort.
The evening being gloomy our work we suspended,
The stacks we secured and we covered the Fogairs.
Well knowing that our threshing that day would be ended,
For rain fell in torrents in sweet Donoughmore.
