- Hedge SchoolsAbout a hundred years ago there were no National schools in Ireland. The schools were called hedge schools. The teachers got no pay from the Government and they got but little pay from the parents of the children whom they taught. Some of these schools were in our district. There was one of them in Lissigriffin. The teacher's name was Harnet. He taught in the open air where the cemetry of Kilmoe now is. In our village we had an old National school. This was a very badly built building. The teacher who then taught there was O'Mahony. Irish was not taught in this school.
