- THE PRIEST'S LEAP is situated about one mile east of Bantry. One day during the Penal Days, the soldiers were pursuing a priest through that place. Before the dawn of day the priest made his painful way through the hill. He was dressed in disguise - in a peasant's garb so that he would not be recognised. Inside his coat, he carried the Sacred Host and on his way he entered a little cabin to nourish a fainting soul with Holy Communion. As he resumed his journey a peasant ran to his side and said; - "Fly, Father! Fly; the spies are near; they watched you on your way. They have sent the soldiers on to seize you or to slay. Quick! Father dear, Here stands my horse, no whip nor spur he needs. Mount you upon his back and put him to his speed." The priest mounted the horse and as he did he heard the soldiers coming. The horse leaped and leaped over a huge rock, and the priest escaped. This is called Priest's leap and the sign of the horse's shoes are still to be seen on the rock.
