This method of planting potatoes was also called "ródáil" and signs of it are still to be seen in Mount Cairn. It is said the ground was graffed around the time of the Famine and the heath which was growing on it burned. The seed were sown in the earth and ashes which remained.
Sprouters are often sown in this district and are a great advantage to those who sow late potatoes. The potatoes are put to sprout in boxes in a well ventilated place about the middle of January. They are left there until the stems are about two inches long and then they are sown(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
