  2. In olden times spinning and weaving was an important industry in Ireland. Women and girls were kept going all the year round making clothes for the people of the house. In those days every house had a spinning wheel.
When the wool was shorn off the sheep it was carefully washed, then it went through a process called carding, then it was made into rolls. Later it was fingered by the spinners and when the spindle was full it was wound into a ball about a stone weight. It was then turned over to the weaver and when gone through the weaver's hands, it was passed on to the tucker. Then it was sent to the dyer to dye it, after that it was ready for the tailor.
The material was called frieze. It was sold at the rate of about 1/6 per bundle. When there was enough manufactured for the people of the house what was left was sold to the shopkeepers and exported.
