  1. Johnny Maher was born in Togher a long time ago. He was as strong as four men. He rambled round the country from place to place and never wore a coat but a flannel waistcoat (báinín). To make this waistcoat he bought two yards of flannel at the woollen mills of Mr D. Coveney Tracton.
    He was a quiet inoffensive man and never asked for food, but the people knew him well and brought him a good meal of boiled milk and bread, or oatmeal stirabout.
    He got a mad start in his youth and when he got this fit he ran round the bogs of Tracton till the madness disappeared. He waved both his hands to warn people to keep out of his way as during this mad fit he never changed his course. Once during a fit he came on some cattle sheltering by the side of the fence and jumped over three of them one after the other. He occasionally worked at the machines during the harvest time, but never drank porter. Bread boiled in milk was his usual food Once at a machine he was picking straw along with two others one on each side of him. Johnny drove his pike deep in the heap of straw. The other two
