- Years ago it is supposed that a crock of gold was found in Clara mountain by one of the Mac Carthys of Rathduane. They became landlords of the latter townland and of Gortavehy and Tourbonia.
It is said that Mac Carthy with his men were engaged in making a fence. While digging they came to a flag. Mac Carthy was looking on. As the men were lifting the flag, he got a glimpse of a crock of gold under the flag and he said they were called to dinner. This was only pretence for when the men went in, the dinner was not ready. His wife, who was a shrewd woman suspected something and told them to wait on.
Mac Carthy, then had ample time to remove the crock of gold. Shortly afterwards he bought the Rathduane House and property so that the money he got was, very likely, portion of the hoard of the noted Daniel OKeeffe.- Faisnéiseoir
