- There are several county Cork men who won fame at athletics. The most noted runner in this district was a man known as the mountain hare. People do not know his name but he lived somewhere near Kilcorney. The running matches used take place after mass on Sundays. There were no prizes in those days but he and his oponents aways ran for about a pound stake. Later on there was a good runner at Millstreet named Denis Sullivan, and another at Cullen named Hickey but although they won several prizes in their day they were always beaten at the championship sports.
