Local Marriage Customs
Marriages usually occurred during Shrove. Shrove is from 7th of January until Ash Wednesday. A great number of marriages took place on Shrove Tuesday. The month of May, and Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are thought unlucky for marriage. The people that do not get married during Shrove it is said that they must go the “Skellig”, because long ago the people got married in Skellig during Lent without breaking the law of the church.
Matches are made in my district. In every area there was a local matchmaker. The match-maker would go to the boy’s house and he asked him “how much money and stock he had”, then he went to he girl’s house and asked her “how much fortune she would be able to pay”. The boy and some of his companions went to the girl’s house and there the parents of the boy and girls settle affairs. A goose was roasted and they called this “plucking the gander”.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
