- Hedge Schools existed in this district in former times. They were not called by any other name except "hedge schools". There was an old school at Patrick Connors of "Doon na Slinn", in an old house where cows were kept. There was also an old school at Denis Connors of "Doonmore".
The teachers had not much more education than anyone and had no houses of their own. They used go around to any house where there were children, and spend a night or two teaching them and they did not get any pay except a little tobacco and food and lodgings. Reading and writing and addition were carried on in the schools. Irish was taught in the schools. Writing was done with chalk and slate but pens or pencils were not used early in the time. Each child had to bring two stones, one to sit on and the other to put under the slate he was writing on. There were no blackboards in those days. The teachers never spent more than two or three Winters in any district.
