  1. Mr Newman who lived in Dromore was the landlord in this district long ago. He was a very kind man and he never evicted anyone. He was very good to the people as he built a number of schools in his estate. Long ago a man went to this landlord and said his children were starving and that he could not pay the rent, although he had the rent in his pocket. The landlord said to go home and feed his family, and the man went to Mallow and bought flour. Mr Newman's ancestors bought the estate from a Cromwellian solider for sixty nine pounds. Sir James Cotter was landlord over the townlands of Ballybought, Gurranes and Gloundine. He evicted the late John Riordan of Gurranes. T
    here was a hut built for him out of the land league funds and he lived in it for years before be bought the farm.
