- There is a house near Rockmills
overlooking the river Funcheon. It was once occupied by a Protestant gentleman named Mr Spratt. He was a great huntsman, and he kept a pack of fox hounds, also several horses. At one time during the hunting season, every night at a certain time the dogs became furious in the kennel.
To find out the cause of this, the kennel man stayed out on watch and there to his great surprise he saw a fox sitting on the wall teasing the dogs, so he reported it to Mr Spratt. He decided next night the fox would appear to give chase.
Reynard came again, and so Mr Spratt and the huntsman had their horse prepared for the chase. The hounds were let out and Reynard made off. Then the hunt started, they crossed the Funcheon and went to Stanardsgrove, from there to Convamore, Ballyhooly, and from there to Watergrasshill where the fox went to ground.
