- Herbs
Among the herbs generally used by the country folk up to the beginning of this century were the Yarrow, the Dandelion, Nettles, and Watercress.
The Yarrow was believed to be an infallible cure for sciatica and such ailments. It was usually stewed in a quantily of water which was then strained off, and put to preserve in bottles.
The sufferer was supposed to drink a wineglassful of the liquid every morning before break-fast.
Dandelion wine is still used as a preventative and cure for internal diseases.
Nettles and Watercress were regarded as very effective blood purifiers which goes to show that the amateur physicians of the past were not quite so ignorant as some people(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
