- The houses of long ago were made of stone and mortar with thatched roofs. The thatch was made of wheaten straw and it was put on by a thatcher.
In these houses there was a bed in the kitchen it was placed by the side wall. It was called a settle. The fire was always again'st the gable wall. The front of the chimney was made of mortar. In some houses the fire was in the centre of the floor and a hole in the roof to have the smoke go out.
Long ago they had no glass in the windows but they had shutters instead. The roofs were made of earth. In former times there was a lot of halfdoors in the district but now there are not so many.
Turf and wood was used for the fire. People used candles for light and also rush light. The candles they used were made from tallow.- Bailitheoir
