  1. Playthings that children make for themselves are a great deal better than those which are bought for them, and really please more. Country children make any amount of toys.
    The little boys long ago used to make an amount of pop-guns. A pop-gun is made of elder with the inside removed, then a ramrod is made. Then get a piece of wet paper and plug it into, one end, then plug the other. Then press the ramrod, and the pressure of air forces out the paper. The children long ago were also very fond of making slings for killing birds. A sling is made from and ash stick, or any rod that has a spring in it. There is a cord tied on firmly to the top of the rod, and this is brought back to the thumb of the hand, in which the rod is held. Where the thumb is inserted there is a strap of leather in order
