    lighted it does not portend well for the house. The houses are decorated with holly and ivy and sometimes laurel. A big log fire is lighted and the log must remain in the fire until the next night.
    On New Years Eve it is customary in many places to bake a large cake and before it is broken at teatime to throw it against the door to keep out hunger for the year.
    The large candle is again lighted on this night, but this time by the youngest member of the family. A candle is often put in each window of the house and left lighting all night. It is customary too with some people to lay the table on New Years Eve and leave the door open all night so that the dead may come back it they want food.
    The christmas decorations are not taken down by some people until Shrove Tuesday night when they are used to bake the pancakes others take them down after the 6th of January.
