putting the potatoes in the drills, and also help in closing the drills.
In the summer months when the potatoes are growing they are sprayed, and weeded, and they are also earthed with a plough.
In the autumn the potatoes are digged out with a plough, and my brother picks them into bags. They are stored safe in pits in the field.
Local names for potatoes are Champions, Beauties, Kerpinks, British Queen, Avon banners, Great-scots and Dates.
The best kind of potatoes for growing in our district are the Champions, and the British-Queen.
Long ago the old people used potatoes instead of starch, and some of the people still use them.
The way they make the starch out of potatoes, they used to grate the potatoes into water, and the starch would pitch in the bottom. Then they would draine the water off, and have starch.
