- In olden times a band of rustlers were known to torment the people of Castlemartyr district. These rustlers met every night at Knockane cross and galloped in different directions to steal all the cattle they could get. All of the farmers were afraid of the band and they were indread to interfere with them. One day a stranger came to Castlemartyr and the people told him about the rustlers. Next day he dressed himself as a tramp and went around to all the farmers to make them come together in a certain place at a certain time. The reason the man dressed himself as a tramp was, because if the band saw him they would kill him, but dressed as a tramp they would think he was begging.
He got all the farmers to meet at Knockane cross, the next evening at four o' clock. They would wait there until the band came. Then they rushed out on the band with clubs. They fought until they came to Castlemartyr where the people of the village helped the farmers and they won.- Bailitheoir
