- Long ago the people did not wear boots until they were about ten years old. The people at that time used to wear boots called Guttaperche boots. It was dangerous to go near the fire with these boots, because the boots would melt with the heat. These boots were water-proof. They cost from a half a crown to three and six-pence a pair.
At the present day many of the old women go barefoot. When footing the turf in the bogs the women go barefoot. We school children, go barefoot in the summer and for nearly all the year. The people wear clogs at the present day especially the old people, because they keep their feet warm and sometimes an old man would put a fist of hay into the clogs to make them more comfortable.
