- 2. KnocklongAbout 250 A.D. Cormac Mac Airt marched against Fiacha Muilleathan king of Munster. He encamped at Druim Daghmaire now called Knocklong. Fiacha encamped on Sliabh Riach. They fought on the plain between, and Cormac was defeated. The Irish word for Knocklong is Cnoc-luinge which means “the hill of the encampment”.Cormac’s druids dried up all the water of Munster and the people and animals were dying for want of water. The king of Munster sent for Mogh Ruith a great druid. Canvore was his servant and the druid ordered his spear to be brought to him. He cast it in the air and he told Canvore to dig up the ground where it fell. Canvore asked what reward would he get and the druid told him that it would be called after him. When he dug it up a well burst forth there and it was called “Tober Canvore”.(continues on next page)
