Page 54Legend connected with Abington Churchyard Co LimerickIn Abington Churchyard an amusing incident happened one night. THere was a public house near the churchyard and is yet there but different people own it. Some men were drinking and one of the crowd was boasting of courage. Another man betted with him that he would not take a skull out of the Churchyard but the first man betted he would. So he set out for the Churchyard and the other man went across the field to be there before him to frighten him. When the first man came he got a skull and was just going away with it when the second man said "Leave that there thast's my head" The first man left back the skull and went to another part of the Churchyard. He got another skull and as he was going away again the second man said in a grave-like tone "Leave that there that's my head" Well said the first man "They can't all be yours, so I'll take this one". So he took the skull and won the bet.
