- Shops were not common in olden times. People often had to go a long distance to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying and Selling were often carried on after Mass and buying is still carried on. Money was not always given for goods. Labour was often given for goods and it is still continued by some. The words "tick" "cant" "boot" "charge"[?] were the words most common connected with buying or selling. It was considered unlucky to transact business on "Monday". In former times the markets were held in "The Market House" which is situated in the centre of Borrisokane. They are still held there. In olden times pedlars and dealers went from house to house selling their wares and buying rags and feathers they are very rare now. The local coins are referred to by the names of a quid - £1 a 6d is called a tanner: a shilling is(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
