In olden times many people never wore boots, in winter or Summer. Those people who wore boots did not begin to wear them until they were fourteen or fifteen years old. Many children in the district go barefooted still in Summer-time.
In this parish there is no shoemaker. Long ago there was a shoemaker living in Killard. He was not supposed to be very good. He used only mend the boots of the neighbours who lived near him. Many people in the parish mend their own boots.
