- In this district of Newport in Penal times there lived in Castlewaller a tyrant named Waller. He was the terror of the whole countryside. He was a terrible opponent of the Catholic Religion. At one time he would not allow the chapel bell to be rung. At this time there lived at Congress a gentleman named Mahony. He presented Waller with a pair of pistols to fight a duel over the ringing of the bell. Waller mounted his horse and rode away. O'Mahony ordered the bell to be rung. It been rung ever since without hindrance.
