  2. I do not know much about the Big Wind of 1839, except that it levelled everything. My grandfather, who handed down the folklore of this district to my father, was born on the Windy Night of 1839.
    About forty five years ago there was a very heavy snowstorm. The snow started falling about the end of January and it was to be seen in the fields in the end of April. My father said said that all the snow drifted against a ditch of ten feet , near his home, and he used to have to walk over the ditch, to get to school. A lane near this school, called Carthy's Lane, was full of snow for many weeks later. There was also
