An old Irish farmer considered Friday his lucky day for beginning any work, especially setting crops. He never began work on the 25th March, this being his unlucky day. He usually managed to sow his onions on the shortest day and pick them on the longest day.
Old people never gave milk or butter, or other farm produce away on the first of May. They refused too to part with money on Monday.
