The pupils had books such as "Carpenter's Spelling Book" and Arithmetic named "Cúrsa Bhaistear." They also had a reading book named "Sequels." The pupils going to these Hedge Schools were great at mental arithmetic.
The pupils used to write with pens made out of quills and they made ink out of alder berries or black berries. Later on they wrote with pointed stones on slates.
Pieces of wood or big stones the pupils used for seats. The teacher's seat was something better. He had a "sugán" chair of very rough make.
Going to the Hedge Schools there was the poor scholar and he of course had no home. When he would come out from the old cabin he wold look to see what point the wind was blowing.
Then he would go with the wind because it was always sure to bring him to a house where he would get good lodging. The Hedge-Master used to get about a half-a-(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
