   Hail! lovely town by winding Shannon's mouth

   Where idle sports amused my idle youth -

   Kilrush, where first I raised my infant head

   Where all my earliest, happiest moments fled.

   Yes; there my hours of childhood wore away

   Like fleecy clouds, which as they fly, decay;

   And every scene that marked my early years,

   Now like a soaring vision bright appears.

   Youth is a flow'ry path or blooming grove

   That seems more charming as we onward rove;

   Nor know we half its sweets when passing through

   Until we take a longing, backward view.

   Each maze unfolds its beauties as we stray

   But manhood's thorny hill impedes the way.

   When winter's gloom around the sky is thrown

   Nature bewails her joyful summer flown;

   When raging storms e'er the ocean fly

   The sailor murmurs for the calm gone by.

   Oh! thus we wish the reign of youth would last

   When manhood's troubled cares are o'er us cast.

   For calms and summers it is vain to mourn

   But youth once past will never more return.

   And dear, oh doubly dear, the schoolboy's spot

   From my remembrance nought but death shall blot.

   The wood surrounded dome where Allan dwelled,
