- Most of the houses long ago were thatched with oaten straw which was got from the farmers after threshing.
There was always a bed in the kitchen and it was called a settle-bed. In the night it was let down, and used for a bed, and in the day-time it was put up and used for a seat it was also placed along a wall.
The fire places were usually at the gable wall, and sometimes along the side wall.
