    Long ago people made bread on griddles and very seldom they used pot ovens. They used to say that griddle bread was better. They made oaten bread of oaten meal, wet it with water. It was given to children going to school because it was more wholesome for them. In Lent they used to make bread and wet it with water.
    They would not put any butter on it.
