Wedding Customs
Why girls are chosen as brides.
One day I asked my grandmother why girls are chosen as brides is it because of their money, their land, their appearance or their manner, and she said that - "girls are chosen for what they are in themselves more than for dowry, stock or goods". "Matches are made and marriages are few".
The custom of fifty years ago were very strictly adhered to. The bride brought to the church a wedding. When the ceremony was finished and the register was signed the cake was cut and given to the guests. The best man or a friend of the bride passed a plate from guest to guest, each in turn gave an offering.
Relatives gave a pound or ten shillings or five shillings. Others gave smaller amounts - half a crown or even a shilling.
This was given as an offering to the Parish Priest and was a very old custom adopted for the support of the priests. For this some services are free where in other parishes an offering is expected.- Bailitheoir
