  1. There are a lot of old poems among the old people in my parish of Girlo such as this one:-
    "The Volunteers" (Football Team)
    I
On the twelfth of June last Sunday,
    I was overcome with joy,
When I read the news of football,
    Advertised in Athboy.
A thought came to my memory,
    Which left me so inclined,
To go and see the "Volunteers,"
    Defeating Rathmoline.
    II
    When dinner was all over,
I felt in right goo cheer,
    I mounted on my freewheel,
    And for Athboy did steer.
    To see the sporting "Volunteers",
    As I often did before,
Assembled there with Gaels who came,
    From the parish of Rathmore.
    III
They looked a hardy lot of lads
As they drove through the town,
Till they arrived at Mrs. Kings,
    Where every man got down;
    Determined on their victory
Which they all loved so dear
That evening on the foot-ball field
    Against the "Volunteers".
Composed by Mr Gilligan, Age 60 years, Drewstown, Athboy, Co Meath
Tras-scríofa ag duine dár meitheal tras-scríbhneoirí deonacha.
