  1. About fifty years ago the majority of the local houses were thatched except a few farmers’ dwellings which were slated and those slates were manufactured at Bangor in the County Down. The thatched roof-inns were made from wheaten or oaten straw and some of the good local thatched were, Dan Swan of Gravelstown, Pat McGrath of Drakerath, and Paddy Keenan of Thomastown.
