- In olden times the houses were nearly all made of clay and stones and the roof was covered with rushes and sedgegrass. The bed was in the kitchen, the name of the beds were - press - bed, settle-bed, chair-bed and there were also beds with a canopy over them. Sometimes the fire was on the centre of the floor and there was a hole in the roof to let the smoke escape.
The floor was made of clay. Half-doors are not common now-a-days nut they were very common formerly.
