Very often the girls had to help in farm work. The usual times for a boy to commence work was at six-o'clock. He then got his breakfast of oaten-meal 'stirabout'. His dinner consisted of boiled potatoes and 'kitchen' - melted fat. Now and again he got a piece of bacon and sometimes he would get drop of tea when he stoped work at seven o'clock. If he had an unkind master the work did not then finish, he was sent to feed cattle wash potatoes, and during the Winter he had to mend boots and harness.
The girl's work never finished. She might steal a few recreation at night or on a Sunday after dinner. She got a rest just when she got to bed. She was a regular drudge-work, work and work.
She had no choice of food. She had to eat anything that was given to her and her bed was usually in a stuffy room or(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
