- The year 1839 is said to be the year of the Big Wind. It was the fiercest wind that ever blew over Ireland. It tore up trees, knocked down houses, burned them, and scattered oats, straw, hay etc. It also injured cattle horses and sheep.
The dresser in our house is made from the trees which fell during the big wind. There was one man living on the boy road and when the wind was a little calm two men went to see was all his property scattered or was his house blown away. When they got there, there was not a stir about. They went to his bedroom window and he was asleep in bed. When they woke him up he told them to go home and not to be annoying him.- Bailitheoir
