Maura Meehan,
Clonave, Coole, Co. Westmeath.
Told to me by:
Dan Smyth,
Clonave, Coole, Co. Westmeath. - Long ago people made nearly all their own wood work and clothing.
Basket making was carried out on in this district long ago. For fancy baskets the rods were boiled. After that the[y] were peeled. It used to take one hundred and thirty rods to make any size of a basket. Stick into the ground twenty one strong rods called standards. Out of your bundle of rods pick twenty one more for the 'crulath'. The rods are then woven and plated [plaited] together and put for the shape of your basket. You continue to pick out a number of twenty one rods and continue to do in like manner until the basket is made.
