- Potatoes are grown on my farm. About half an acre is sown under potatoes each year. We do not manure the ground before being turned up, but sometimes we shake lime on the ground, and plough it in, because it kills the worms and slugs and especially the wire worms.
When the land is broken out of the lea or green sod, it is generally ploughed into ridges as it would be very difficult to make drills.
There are two different ways of making these ridges; one is by what is called "skinning" or turning up the whole sod, and making it in the form of a ridge with a furrow left on each side; the other way is by marking or scoring. The sod is turned up on each side of the ridge which is about three feet wide, and centre is left unmoved. The manure is then spread on the centre of the ridge, and the potatoes are then placed about a foot apart each way, and covered with earth(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
